The film will be based on Tom Rubython's recently published biography Shunt: The Story of James Hunt.
Pettyfer will produce the movie himself, alongside John Palermo (The Wolverine).
Hunt was Formula 1 World Champion in 1976 driving a McLaren, following a season-long battle with Ferrari's Niki Lauda.
After retiring from the sport, he went on to form a highly entertaining double act with BBC commentator Murray Walker.
Pettyfer can next be seen in the sci-fi thriller I Am Number Four with Timothy Olyphant.
